About the Drake Road Races The Drake Road Races serves as the official start to the Drake Relays! Competitors in the Drake Road Races are the first athletes to cross the finish line on the Blue Oval with the races finishing inside Drake Stadium. The first Drake Relays Marathon was held in 1969 where twenty-two men started at the footsteps of the Iowa State Capitol and finished inside Drake Stadium. The first winner was Jay Dirksen, in a time of 2:35.17.
